Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge Announces Director of Philanthropy
Born and raised in Norfolk, VA, Sarah received her BA in Political Science from then Virginia Wesleyan College, now University. While getting her degree, she also started her now 30+ year career in the nonprofit sector, first as a work study and then a parttime staffer in the Office for Development and PR. As part of small team full of mentors ready to help her grow and explore the field, Sarah was introduced to alumni and donor relations, capital campaigns, data management, event planning, grant writing, public relations, strategic planning, and so much more.
Sarah has put that early experience to good use working with human services organizations as well as primary and higher education institutions in Norfolk and Charlottesville. In addition to Virginia Wesleyan, she worked with Hope House and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia before relocating to Charlottesville in 2000. Locally, Sarah has worked with Charlottesville Catholic School, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Senior Center, Inc. (now The Center at Belvedere), and The Fralin Museum of Art at UVA.
Having joined the Board of Directors for PACEM in 2021, Sarah recently became Chair.
Sarah cites her earliest mentors, her mother Donna and grandmother Rose, for instilling in her the values of community and service to others. This is why she works with nonprofit organizations that so closely align with her personal values.
When not working, Sarah enjoys spending time with her husband Matt, son Connor, and canine daughter Moose. You can often find her cheering for Connor at his lacrosse games, attending UVA Athletics and lifelong learning events, and when able to carve out quiet time, reading a good mystery novel.
Sarah is excited to be a part of the BBBS team and looks forward to working with the Bigs, Littles, families, and supporters who make this organization so special.
